Managing Editor

Due to recent growth, we are currently looking for a Managing Editor to lead and manage a team in researching, concepting, writing, and editing for magazine, catalog, digital and/or web-based content as directed by the Project Director.

Job Duties

  • Follow production schedules and meet deadlines
  • Generate and manage editorial briefs, editorial outlines, bookmaps, tracking documents, management oversight vehicles and scheduling tools
  • Coordinate and participate in brainstorm, progress, assignment and project/team-member oversight meetings
  • Write excellent text and interview industry professionals and celebrities
  • Drive to locations for research, interviews, photo shoots or other project needs
  • Research, select and purchase product being considered for editorial features
  • Balance personal and team assignments to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality work
  • Assign stories and guides writers to produce original, engaging text according to the project’s style guide, tone, voice and editorial goals
  • Work with the Test Kitchen Director for recipe development and attend food panels, as directed by the Project Director
  • Collaborate with the art department and/or Project Director to create editorially and artistically cohesive works that meet established strategy goals
  • Flow text and write into digital files, as needed
  • Copy edits/proofreads all content using digital and hard copy methods
  • Use and maintain physical and digital story folders
  • Conducts post project tasks and compiles analytical data
  • Display excellent communication, grammar and punctuation skills and working knowledge of style manuals and credible resource use
  • Exhibit strong attention to detail, with an understanding and goal of achieving high-level, refined work
  • Ability to multi-task, assess and prioritize layered deliverables with different schedules
  • Maintain orderly oversight of others and timely delivery of department’s work
  • Showcase a positive, can-do attitude
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism or related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ editorial experience in magazine publishing
  • Minimum 2 years’ proven team leadership experience
  • Able to write, edit and/or produce assigned articles
  • Expert understanding of English grammar
  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding of and respect for media law
  • Able to maintain a consistent writing style and proofread articles for grammatical errors, voice/tone and substance in adherence with the Editorial Outline, project style guide and standard style guides (AP and Chicago)
  • Experience researching and sourcing editorial content; skilled at using reference resources
  • Solid understanding of trends, timely, relevant stories and viral content
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills; able to meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to work collaboratively while maintaining high standards
  • Positive attitude
  • Knowledge of cuisine, crafting, health and fitness related topics
